FAQBampton is a very old village and dates back at least to Roman times. Until relatively recently however Bampton people did not move and stayed more or less within the village envelope or very closeby. Over the last couple of centuries however people did start to move away, some going elsewhere in the UK, but many went overseas and are, or their descendents are, now scattered around the globe. As such, we get many questions about familiy ties - people seeking information on their ancestors or living relatives. We also get quite a lot of questions about the WWII years, when US troops were billeted in Bampton for a time. And of course RAF Brize Norton is only a few miles up the road, and we get questions and requests coming in on a regular basis from people who were linked in some way to the Base in the past, and wanting to know what has changed, and what has not. In this section of the website, we try and provide answers to typical questions. But remember one thing. There are more Bamptons in England, so it is useful just to check you have thr right one - i.e. Bampton, Oxfordshire! - before you launch questions at us! Can you tell me anything on what is happening to RAF Brize Norton?
The base is being expanded to accommodate more aircraft since Lyneham is scheduled to close in a few years time. As far as is known, the final lineup of aircraft at the base will include the Hercules J model, the Airbus A400M, the Airbus A330 tanker/transport aircraft, and the Boeing C17 transport.
